Today, the United States is celebrating Rosa Parks Day, in memory of the civil rights leader, in order to promote equal opportunities across communities. Segregation laws were abolished in America almost 60 years ago, but the effects of racial exclusion, and indeed slavery, continue to show in the labor market. Graziella Bertocchi discusses why descendants of slaves can suffer from poorer labor outcomes, from education to earnings—particularly in the US. She suggests that educational policies could be a good first step towards equality, but notes that these will take time to take effect.
