Permanent migration to Germany up 40%

Permanent migration to Germany rose nearly 40% in the year to 2012, driven in part by the economic crisis in the eurozone.

According to the OECD, the number of people coming to Germany rose by 72% between 2007 and 2012, to almost 400,000. This compares with a 60% decrease in migration to crisis-hit Spain, and 73% decrease to Ireland in the same period.

This surge towards Germany is thought to be due to its robust jobs market and strong political standing during the sovereign debt crisis in Europe.
