Ministers celebrate Policy Day with IZA World of Labor
IZA World of Labor and Universidad del Pacífico celebrated the Policy Day of the 9th IZA/World Bank Conference with Jaime Saavedra, the Minister of Education; Edgar Quispe, Vice-Minister of Labour; and Milagros Alvarado, Director of Higher Education.
The Ministers discussed the skills and labor policies during two roundtables at the event, organized by Gustavo Yamada, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Finance College, and in cooperation with Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann, of the IZA and Editor-in-Chief of IZA World of Labor.
Panellists discussed how Peru has seen a huge increase in higher education and in professional employment with a growth of about 40% in the past 15 to 20 years. The panel agreed that there was a continuing need to respond rapidly to the changes in the labor markets. This included:
• To increase the quality of higher education.
• To provide guidance to young people to help them make informed choices regarding education and what it can translate into regarding the labor market.
• A recognition that learning is a continuous process, which highlights the need for people to have the tools to use their education.
• Peru has to make an effort to attract people to come teach in Peru and this internationalisation is part of a forceful education system.
The ministers agreed that adaptation and skill development are challenges not only for Peru and these can be overcome, in part, through decisions related to policy.
