Unemployment spike in Germany and France
Unemployment in Europe’s two largest economies rose unexpectedly last month, with record high figures in France and a surprise uptick in Germany.The jobless count in Germany rose by 24,000 to 2.905 million, the biggest monthly increase in over five years and far from analysts’ predictions of a 15,000 decrease. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in France also saw a shock increase to a record 3.364 million.
Economists have suggested that this proportional rise could simply be due to a weaker “spring upturn”, as fewer jobs were lost during last year’s mild winter.
